Common causes for this symptom.

  • Dirty or iced evaporator coil.

    A clogged filter starves the indoor coil of airflow until it freezes over. Once it ices up, no cold air leaves the registers — and the root cause is almost always a filter that has not been changed in months.

  • Low refrigerant from a leak.

    Systems do not consume refrigerant — if charge is low, there is a leak. Refrigerant work requires EPA Section 608 certified handling; we locate the leak, repair it, and recharge to the manufacturer spec.

  • Failed capacitor on the outdoor unit.

    The dual-run capacitor on the condenser starts the compressor and condenser fan. When it weakens, the outdoor unit hums but does not spin up — a $20 part that takes the whole system down.

  • Thermostat sensor drift.

    A thermostat reading 5–8°F off will cycle the system early and leave rooms warm. Recalibration or sensor relocation usually solves it without replacement.
