Walk-in repair: door seals are the first place to check
If a walk-in cooler or freezer is running warmer than it should, the first place to check is the door, not the refrigeration system. Door issues account for more walk-in performance problems than any single mechanical failure.
What goes wrong with walk-in doors
Door problems we see constantly:
- Gaskets that are cracked, torn, or compressed permanently
- Door not closing flush against the frame (hinges sagging or frame warped)
- Self-closing mechanism failed, door staying open after staff walk through
- Strip curtains missing, damaged, or never installed
- Latch not engaging properly
- Heater wire (around the door frame to prevent ice) failed on freezers
A failed gasket alone can let in enough warm air to drive a cooler 5-8 degrees warmer than setpoint. The compressor runs constantly trying to catch up. Owners assume the refrigeration is failing when really the door isn’t sealing.
The five-minute check
You can diagnose most door issues in 5 minutes:
- Close the door and look around the frame for visible gaps
- Run your hand around the door edge feeling for cold spots or air draft
- Open the door and inspect the gasket surface for tears or compression damage
- Confirm the self-closer pulls the door fully shut from a 45-degree open position
- Check strip curtains for damage or missing strips
