A walk-in cooler or freezer install for a commercial space looks like a single big purchase, but the cost ranges widely based on factors most operators don’t think about until they’re getting quotes. Knowing what drives the price helps you ask the right questions.
The major cost variables
A walk-in install quote varies by:
- Size in cubic feet (the most obvious factor)
- Indoor vs outdoor location (outdoor needs weatherproof condenser housing)
- Cooler vs freezer (freezers need more insulation and heavier-duty equipment)
- Self-contained vs remote condensing (remote is more flexible but more install work)
- Floor type: insulated floor included or building on existing concrete
- Door type and number (glass doors, strip curtains, dual doors all add cost)
- Electrical service availability (sometimes panel upgrade needed)
- Permit requirements per jurisdiction
A small 6’x8’ indoor cooler can be done for 8,000-12,000 turn-key. A 12’x20’ freezer with remote condensing and an outdoor pad can hit 35,000+.
What’s worth spending on
A few places where the extra money pays back over the life of the unit:
- Better insulation (more cubic feet of foam in walls and ceiling)
- Quality refrigeration equipment (the cheap brands cost more to repair over time)
- Proper electrical service with disconnect at the unit
- A door alarm system if the unit is unattended for stretches
- Light fixtures rated for cold and humid environments
