Santa Ana: heat-driven failures and what causes them

Santa Ana sits inland enough that summer temperatures push higher than coastal cities by 5-10 degrees. Plus the urban heat island effect — lots of pavement, lots of buildings, fewer trees in some neighborhoods. The result is HVAC systems that run harder than they were designed for, and a specific set of failures we see in this city.

What heat does to systems

Three failure modes that show up more often in Santa Ana than elsewhere:

  • Compressor overheat shutdowns. The compressor has an internal thermal switch that opens when winding temperature exceeds spec. Once it cools, the unit restarts. Owners often call this “the AC stops then starts on its own.” It means the compressor is running too hot, usually from low refrigerant, dirty coils, or both.
  • Capacitor failure rate is significantly higher. Heat is what kills capacitors. A capacitor that would last 8 years in Newport Beach often fails at 4-5 years in a Santa Ana attic.
  • Outdoor fan motor seizures. The bearings dry out in extreme heat and the motor stops spinning, which trips the high-pressure switch in the compressor.

What to do about it

If your Santa Ana AC has been working overtime this summer:

  • Check the filter monthly during peak season
  • Hose the outdoor coil monthly
  • Watch for any pattern of the unit stopping and restarting on its own (that’s an early compressor symptom)
  • Consider an annual pre-summer check with someone who’ll measure refrigerant properly
