Refrigerator repair: when fixing makes sense

Residential refrigerator in a kitchen

A 10-year-old refrigerator with a 600 dollar repair bill is a decision point. The math on residential refrigerator repair has shifted in the last few years as new refrigerator quality has dropped and repair parts have become more accessible. Here’s how to think about it.

The repair vs replace math

A basic rule: if the repair cost is more than half the cost of a comparable replacement, replace. Under a third, repair. In between, judgment.

For refrigerators specifically:

  • Compressor failure on a 10+ year old unit: usually replace
  • Control board failure: judgment, depends on cost
  • Defrost system failure: usually repair, parts are cheap
  • Door gasket replacement: always repair, less than 200 dollars typically
  • Ice maker not working: usually repair, often a 20 dollar part

The wild card is what you’d replace it with. A new 1,200 dollar bottom-freezer fridge from a big box store will not last the way the one you’re replacing did. A high-end 4,000 dollar replacement might. Be honest about what you’re actually buying.

What we look at

When we run a residential refrigerator repair call, the diagnostic covers:

  • Compressor operation (running, short-cycling, not running)
  • Condenser coil condition (usually filthy if it’s been more than 5 years)
  • Door gasket integrity
  • Defrost cycle test
  • Thermostat or thermistor readings
  • Evaporator fan motor operation

We give you a written quote before doing the work. If it doesn’t make sense to repair, we tell you. More on refrigerator repair and related commercial refrigerator repair for businesses.
