Mission Viejo: lake-area homes and humidity surprises
A lot of Mission Viejo, especially around Lake Mission Viejo, runs warmer and stickier in summer than the elevation would suggest. We get more humidity-related comfort complaints from this area than from drier inland cities like Yorba Linda. The fix isn’t always a bigger AC.
Why bigger isn’t better
Most people assume that if a house feels humid, the AC needs to be larger. Often it’s the opposite. An oversized system cools the air to the thermostat setpoint quickly and shuts off before it’s pulled much moisture out. Smaller, longer-running systems dehumidify better.
Symptoms of an oversized Mission Viejo AC:
- House cools to setpoint fast but never feels comfortable
- Cold and clammy feeling at the setpoint
- Short cycling (system runs less than 10 minutes per cycle in mid-summer)
- High electric bills despite the fast cooling
We see this a lot in homes where a previous owner upgraded from a 3-ton to a 4-ton thinking more was better. It usually isn’t.
What actually helps humidity
A few options depending on the system:
- Two-stage or variable-speed AC that runs longer at lower output
- A whole-house dehumidifier tied into the duct system
- Adjusting the air handler fan speed down (sometimes a free fix)
- Re-evaluating system size at the next replacement
