Heating system install: choosing the right type
If you’re putting heat into a home that doesn’t have it, or completely replacing an aging system, the choice between options matters more than the brand you pick. Here’s a quick framework for picking the right heating system for an Orange County home.
The three main options
Most homes here end up with one of three:
- Gas furnace with a separate AC. Most common in existing homes. Gas heat is cheap, the equipment lasts, the install is well-understood.
- Heat pump. One system does both heating and cooling. Better efficiency in our climate but higher install cost and depends on electric rates.
- Ductless mini-split heat pumps. A good fit when there is no existing ductwork or for single-room additions.
The right answer depends on what you have now and what you’re willing to spend up front.
When to pick what
A few guidelines from what we see installing systems across Orange County:
- Existing gas furnace and ducts in decent shape: replace with gas furnace, simplest and cheapest path
- No existing heat but have ductwork: heat pump usually wins
- No existing heat and no ducts: ductless mini-split heat pumps, especially for partial-house heat
- Solar panels on the roof: heat pump leverages your existing electric generation, often the right call
- Strong preference for radiant heat or hydronic: separate conversation, less common in Orange County
