Ductless mini-splits: when they're the right answer
Ductless mini-splits have gone from a niche product to a mainstream option in the last 10 years, and we install more of them every year. They’re not right for every situation, but for some Orange County homes they’re the often the right call.
When mini-splits win
Three situations where we typically recommend them:
- Older homes without existing ductwork (running new ducts is expensive and intrusive)
- Single rooms that need cooling without expanding the existing system (sunrooms, garages, bonus rooms)
- Whole-house solutions where a multi-zone setup makes more sense than central AC
Each indoor head is independently controlled, so you can cool the master bedroom at night and leave the rest of the house alone. The outdoor unit modulates output based on demand, which is more efficient than the on-off cycling of traditional AC.
What to expect on install
A typical ductless install:
- One outdoor unit (condenser) mounted on a pad or wall bracket
- One to five indoor heads (heads share the outdoor unit on multi-zone systems)
- Refrigerant lines and a small electrical conduit run through walls or behind exterior trim
- Time: usually 1-2 days for a 2-3 head install
- Cost: ranges widely based on number of heads, from 4,500 for a single zone to 18,000+ for whole-house
