Dana Point coastal install: condenser placement matters
Where you put the outdoor condenser on a Dana Point home matters more than most installers will tell you. Get it wrong and the unit dies years early. Get it right and you’ve added real life to the system.
What to look for in placement
The four things that matter on a coastal install:
- Distance from the bluff edge or beach exposure (further is better)
- Shade in the afternoon, but airflow on all sides
- Drainage so the pad doesn’t sit in standing water
- Service access for filter and coil cleaning
A condenser tucked between two walls of a house with no shade and salt air blowing across it 12 hours a day will lose 30-40% of its rated life. We’ve replaced 8-year-old units in Dana Point that looked 15 years old because they sat in a bad spot.
When to consider relocation
If your current Dana Point condenser is at the front of the house facing the ocean and the previous owner installed it that way, ask about relocating it during the next service. Moving the unit to a more sheltered side of the home isn’t trivial — it involves new line set, possibly new electrical — but on a system that’s 5-7 years old, it can be worth it.
