Commercial refrigerator repair: temperature is the warning sign
A commercial refrigerator that’s running 2-3 degrees warmer than usual isn’t broken yet, but it’s telling you something. Catching the warning before the failure is the difference between a routine repair and a refrigerator full of spoiled product.
What temperature drift means
Most commercial refrigerators should hold between 36-38 degrees. If you’re consistently reading 40+, you have one of a few problems:
- Refrigerant slightly low from a slow leak
- Condenser coil dirty (most common, often free to fix)
- Failing door gasket letting warm air in
- Thermostat drift (not a real issue, just needs calibration)
- Defrost cycle not clearing properly, leaving ice on the evaporator
The condenser cleaning is the easiest check. Pull the front grill and look at the coil. If it’s coated with dust, grease, or lint (very common in kitchens), vacuum it carefully and the temperatures will often return to normal within 24 hours.
When to actually call
Call us when:
- Temperatures are consistently above 41 degrees
- You hear unusual sounds from the compressor or fan
- Ice is building up on the evaporator (visible from inside the cabinet)
- The unit is short-cycling (running for short bursts then shutting off)
- Door gaskets are visibly damaged or you can see light through them when closed
