AC repair: the diagnostic that actually finds the problem
When AC repair gets expensive, it’s usually because the first tech misdiagnosed the problem, replaced the wrong part, and the system failed again two weeks later. A proper diagnostic finds the root cause the first time. Here’s what that looks like.
The diagnostic process
A real AC diagnostic visit follows a sequence. Skip steps and you’re guessing.
- Listen to the customer’s description fully — what changed, when, how often
- Visual inspection of indoor and outdoor units before powering on
- Check filter condition, thermostat settings, and breaker status
- Power on and observe startup behavior at both indoor and outdoor units
- Gauges on the service ports to read refrigerant pressures
- Calculate superheat and subcool to confirm charge level
- Electrical readings on capacitor, contactor, motor windings
- Static pressure across the air handler if airflow seems off
This takes 45-90 minutes depending on what we find. We don’t skip steps to save time — the cost of misdiagnosing is much higher than the time saved.
