AC install: why right-sizing matters more than brand
Most people getting AC installation quotes focus on brand and price. The single biggest factor in whether your new system will work well is something most installers gloss over: the size. Right-sizing is more important than which brand badge is on the cabinet.
Why oversizing is so common
Sizing by square footage alone is fast and easy. An installer can quote in 10 minutes. A real Manual J load calculation takes 45-60 minutes of actual work, accounting for:
- Window area and orientation
- Insulation quality and air sealing
- Building age and construction
- Internal heat gains
- Local design temperatures
When an installer skips that work, they round up to be safe. Oversizing is rarely caught by the homeowner — the AC cools the house, after all. But oversized systems short-cycle, dehumidify poorly, and shorten compressor life.
What right-sizing buys you
A properly sized AC:
- Runs longer cycles at lower output, which dehumidifies better
- Costs less to operate because it’s not constantly starting and stopping
- Lasts longer because compressor starts are what wear it down
- Is quieter because it can run at variable speed if equipped
The cost difference between a 3-ton and a 4-ton system on install is usually 800-1,500 dollars. The cost of oversizing in long-term comfort and equipment life is much higher.
